DLM specialise in the design, manufacture, repair and calibration of load cells and load monitoring equipment. They approached Realise to design the user interface to their new wireless tensile load monitoring receiver.
The challenge was to design a new interface to be as intuitive as possible for industrial/marine users worldwide. Plus of course this all needed to be done in a very tight timescale and look great within their new brand guidelines. No problem for team Realise!
We produced a formative task analysis to map out the tasks and processes that the user would undertake. From there we developed an interface flow that halved the previous number of steps required to carry out the core (under pressure) tasks.
Based on this we then designed the icon set and keypad graphics to maximise intuitiveness for international users, creating a much clearer hierarchy of the button importance. Finally we produced the documentation ready for manufacture. All turned around in 14 days.
DLM first showed their new handset at Seaworks 2011 and immediately began taking orders. They have already doubled sales on the previous design, receiving excellent feedback from customers, who say they’ve choosen the DLM product as it stands out as being innovative and of higher quality in such a traditionally functional engineering market.
